Sandia National Laboratories’ MESA Microlab Design & Education Center (2006)

*Note: MESA is an acronym for Microsystems and Engineering Science Applications. The $516M MESA Project was the largest infrastructure investment in Sandia’s history. This complex enables Sandia National Labs to execute its enduring mission of assuring safety, security, and reliability of nuclear weapons and to fulfill a prominent role in the nation’s science and engineering enterprise for national security.

Three Facilities Plus An Information Kiosk:

1) The Education Center:

A high-resolution (8.3 MegaPixel) Micro-Device Imaging Facility

Features Include:

High-Resolution Display

  • 8.3 mega-pixel (3840×2160) projector array, comprised of four Digital Projection Inc. Highlite 10000HD projectors stacked in a rear-projection configuration
  • Each Digital Projection 10000HD projector: 3-chip DLP technology 10000 lumens 2048×1080 pixels Digital Cinema “dark chip”
  • 9ft x 18ft Stewart Filmscreen Aeroview-100, 1/2in thick glass screen
  • Array resolution of 3840×2160 pixels.

Two True-HD (1920×1080) front-projected displays on wall to left & right of high-resolution display wall

  • Sanyo PLV-HD10 LCD projectors

Audiovisual “popup” interfaces for connecting laptops into the system for display onscreen

  • Each popup includes power, network, video input, audio input, control system interface

Technical Lectern (designed by David Logsted)

Lectern includes:

  • 2 PC sources
  • Laptop “popup” interface
  • Crestron touch panel control panel with realtime annotation
  • Keyboard/mouse control station
  • 1920×1200 LCD monitor
  • Sound reinforcement microphone
  • VCR, DVD, document camera

Microscope Camera

Microscope camera includes:

  • Sony X310 HD-SDI HD camera mounted to Olympus microscope optics for inspection and display of micro-system technology devices
  • Designed for intuitive use in the manner of a high-resolution microscope “document camera”.
  • Long focal distance provides ample room for various devices
  • Images may be displayed onscreen within facility or sent out via videoconferencing

Audio:

  • 7.1 Surround Sound via Lexicon MC-4 processor
  • EAW speakers for program audio
  • Tannoy ceiling “can” speakers for conference audio
  • Crown amplification

Videoconferencing: ISDN & IP, front and rear room cameras
Video switching of DVI, HD-SDI, RGBHV, S-Video
KVM Switching infrastructure for control of multiple PCs from multiple locations
Video/image sharing with neighboring facilities

Seating: seating for 38, including training style tables

2) The Design Center:

A place for engineers to design micro-devices and teach such design skills

Features Include:

  • Two True-HD (1920×1080) front-projected 8ft wide displays
    • Sanyo PLV-HD10 LCD projectors in ceiling with mirror underneath
  • Audiovisual “popup” interfaces for connecting laptops into the system for display onscreen
    • Each popup includes power, network, video input, audio input, control system interface
  • 14 computer workstation desks for individual design work
    • Dual displays
    • Audiovisual “popup” interfaces
  • 1080p HD LCD Display (Clarity Baycat, 1920×1080) with Smartboard interactive overlay for real time annotation/whiteboard capability
  • Videoconferencing: ISDN & IP, front and rear room cameras
  • Conference Table
    • Two Audiovisual “popup” interfaces
    • Crestron UPX2 driven control panel with annotative capability
  • Microscope Camera
    • Sony X310 HD-SDI HD camera mounted to Olympus microscope optics for inspection and display of micro technology devices
    • Designed for intuitive use in the manner of a high-resolution microscope “document camera”.
    • Long focal distance provides ample room for various devices
    • Images may be displayed onscreen within facility or sent out via videoconferencing

3) The Design Review Conference Room (DRCR):

An executive conference room for presentation and design review

Features Include:

  • Rear projection center display housed in furniture-like cabinet
    • Sanyo PLV-HD10 projector, 1920×1080 resolution (1080p)
  • Horizontal projection table for electronic document interaction and general conference use
    • Stone (Quartz) table surface
    • 30in tall by 8ft glass projection screen mounted in table surface
    • 3 SXGA+ (1400×1050) projectors underfloor, focused on screen
    • Two integrated audiovisual interface “laptop popup” boxes
    • PZM microphones for videoconferencing
    • Crestron automation control system touch panel interface
  • 1080p HD LCD Display (Clarity Baycat, 1920×1080) with Smartboard interactive overlay for real time annotation/whiteboard capability
  • Videoconferencing: ISDN & IP, front and rear room cameras
  • Microscope Camera
    • Sony X310 HD-SDI HD camera mounted to Olympus microscope optics for inspection and display of micro technology devices
    • Designed for intuitive use in the manner of a high-resolution microscope “document camera”.

For passers-by to obtain information and for users to hold impromptu meetings

    • Cable/Satellite TV (e.g. running news programming)
  • Furniture-like equipment rack with laminate counter-top under LCD display
  • Audiovisual “popup” for connecting laptops into the system for display onscreen
    • Popup includes power, network, video input, audio input
  • Crestron automation control system touch panel interface
  • VCR, DVD
  • Audio: EAW speakers, Crown amplification
